Scaled back ANZAC Day commemorations

anzac

This year’s ANZAC Day commemorations will take place with a dawn service at Kaiuku Marae and a town service.

Our local ANZAC Day commemorations will again be scaled down because of COVID, but that does not diminish its significance says Wairoa Mayor Craig Little.

ANZAC Day, next Monday, April 25, is a special day when we as New Zealanders can officially remember and acknowledge those who have gone before us.

“Personally, ANZAC Day is a very significant time for me, and I acknowledge it is difficult to have scaled back events. However, I know, in our hearts, everyone will still pay their tributes and remember those who went before us

It is really important that we also protect our returned service people and keep them safe by limiting our gathering size, following social distancing and wearing masks.

This year the dawn service will begin at Kaiuku Marae, East Coast Road, Mahia at 5.45am. This will be followed by the Wairoa Civic Service which will be held in town at the War Memorial Hall at 11am.

“I know it is hard once again to limit our commemorations, but we need to take extra special care of our older veterans, and I do look forward to seeing old friends at these services- but from a distance.”
