Success through tourism fund

2021 09 28b

Public toilet facilities will be improved and built at Mahanga and Te Reinga following a successful application through Central Government’s Tourism Infrastructure fund.

The Wairoa District Council application saw $322,820 approved for the toilet blocks and for seven big belly rubbish bins.

The fund will see a brand-new toilet facility built at Te Reinga and an upgrade of the current Mahanga toilet facility.

The Tourism Infrastructure Fund (TIF) provides up to $25 million annually to develop tourism-related infrastructure that supports regions facing pressure from tourism growth. Tourism is hugely important to the New Zealand economy, and quality infrastructure and facilities help to ensure New Zealanders can continue to enjoy their own spaces — whether they are at home or visiting other parts of the country.

The fund supports local communities facing pressure from tourism growth and in need of assistance — areas with high visitor numbers but small ratepayer bases, for example.

The purpose of the fund is to protect and enhance New Zealand’s reputation both domestically and internationally. Supporting robust infrastructure contributes to quality experiences for visitors and maintains the social licence for the sector to operate.

Wairoa District Council Chief Executive Officer Kitea Tipuna said Wairoa has been very fortunate to have received a significant amount of money through this fund. This has enabled us to make improvements throughout the rohe that can be enjoyed by our local people and visitors.

“Unfortunately, the Responsible Camping Fund is not being renewed this year. Previously we have used this funding for a Freedom Camping Ambassador initiative at Mahia and in town. The Ambassador Programme has been very successful, and Council is investigating what external funding can be sourced to continue the roll out of this programme.”
