Lockdown Legends

ScaleWidthWyI1MDAiXQ COVID 8

Council is celebrating Wairoa’s lockdown legends acknowledging the positive difference our local

people are making in the Wairoa community.

This week Maihi Kaimoana, Leena Jenkins, The Wairoa Star and Theresa Dwyer have been

nominated for going the extra mile.

Maihi Kaimoana was nominated after he paid to help a shopper buy their groceries at New World

supermarket. The shopper was going to have to put some of the items from their trolley back on

their shelf until Maihi stepped in and paid the shortfall.

Leena Jenkins has put her job at the Wairoa Pharmacy first. She has been continuing to go to work

and do the mahi even though she could stay home with her kids. She has put the needs of the

community in front of her own needs and has helped customers through a difficult time.

The Wairoa Star was nominated for continuing to publish and deliver our community newspaper

twice a week during the challenging COVID restrictions.

Staff have carried on working to bring our community the news so people can stay up to date and

stay safe.

Theresa Dwyer has been selflessly helping out local kaumātua by collecting their rubbish and

dropping off firewood. This has meant Wairoa’s senior citizens can stay safe in their bubble knowing

Theresa is looking after them. Theresa has also used social media to encourage other people to help

out.

Congratulations to all those people who have made a difference and helped people in our

community during the COVID-19 lockdown.
