Visitor spend continues to grow

CBD

Wairoa’s visitor spend is remaining strong.

In the 12 months to October 2020, total visitor spend for Wairoa District was $18.1m. That’s up 3.2% on the previous year when the visitor spend was recorded at $17.5million.

The 3.2% growth is the fourth best among all 67 territorial authorities.

Of those territorial authorities Wairoa’s domestic growth sits in tenth place (6.4%) with only seven of the 67 territorial authorities experiencing positive growth.

Wairoa District Council interim chief executive Kitea Tipuna said visitors spending money in the district is a good stimulus for the local economy.

“The COVID-19 international travel restrictions have meant more New Zealanders taking time to experience what is on their own back doorstep.

“Wairoa has some beautiful destinations from beaches and bush, sea to rivers and lots of other attractions.

“Tourism is a potential we are slowly unlocking, and we will continue to work with local tangata whenua, operators and where possible access Central Government funding to develop our tourism infrastructure without impacting on our ratepayers.”
