The Solid Waste Strategy sets out Council’s commitment to managing solid waste activities within the District over the next 10 years.  It has set a clear goal to achieve zero waste by 2010.  The intention is for Council to lead the way by enabling the private and community sectors to respond to the zero waste challenge.

Council will continue to monitor the effectiveness of the public sectors response to the zero waste challenge together with community satisfaction and waste generation levels.   At present there is limited information regarding the quantity and types of waste generated within the district.

Council acknowledges that waste management is in a time of change and efforts to educate and inform the community will require greater commitment.  Key changes will see a greater move towards “user pays” together with a need to encourage more private sector involvement in waste management.

Council will, for the foreseeable future, continue to operate a centralised landfill site in Wairoa to cater for non-recyclable material and also accepts the need to manage “after care” at various closed rural landfills throughout the District.
