Immortalising Moko in the form of a permanent memorial is the aim of a group of Mahia residents, who are now seeking donations from the public to make it happen.
Wairoa District Council have made the initial donation of $1000 into a bank account set up to raise the cash necessary to build a reminder of the dolphin, who spent most of his short life in the waters off Mahia Beach before being found dead on the shores of Matakana Island earlier this month.
Several design options are being considered by the group, along with two possible sites. Once the ideas are further developed, public opinion will be sought to come up with the most suitable memorial. A proposal will eventually be put together and presented as a submission to the council’s Reserves Management Plan.
In the meantime, the fundraising needs to get underway. Those wishing to make a contribution to the memorial can do so by depositing money into the Moko-Mahia Memorial account, 03-0785-0070470-005.
Everyone who makes a donation will receive a Moko-themed certificate of appreciation.
