Fireplace Consent

A Fireplace Consent is required before any Fireplace is installed.

You need a fireplace consent when installing or replacing a new or second hand freestanding or inbuilt Fireplace.

How do I apply?
You will need to complete a Building Consent Application Form.

The Building Consent application is published in the Adobe Reader format.  You will need to install the Adobe Reader program on your computer in order to read them.  If you do not already have the Adobe Reader installed you can download it from the Adobe website.

To make an application for Building Consent, you must provide the following information to show that your proposed work will comply with the NZ Building Code.

  • Two copies of the manufacturers specifications, giving details of the correct method of installation, recommended clearance distrances from combustible elements and flue kits
  • Two copies of the site plan
  • Two copies of single-line drawing of the room layout of the house showing the position of the fire place

If the heater has a wetback which is to be connected to your hot water system the name of a registered plumber who will be responsible for the work must be included.

Inbuilt Fireplaces
Appliances which are to be fitted to existing fireplaces require a building consent.  You will need to check that none of the timber framing around the fireplace is in contact with or closer the 50mm to the fire surround, and that the mantle place is clear of the top of the fire by 500mm, as required by the manufacturer’s installation instructions.

The Plumbing and Drainage Inspector will approve the fireplace consent and inspect the fireplace installation once completed.

If you provide all of this information with your application, your Building Consent will be issued within 20 working days and then you will be able to carry out your intended building work in accordance with the Building Act 2004.

Fees:

Please refer the Building Concent Application Form above.

If any of this information is missing, your application cannot be processed and the 20-day period will be held up until YOU provide the information that is required.

NOTE: The above information is a guide.  Any questions should be discussed with the Regulatory Department.

For more information relating to Fireplace Consents, you can contact  Corinne Hamlin at Wairoa District Council Offices, and on (06) 838 7309.
